It is interest that when you simplify a task you have to be careful on how you automate, I can be helpful and harmful at the same time if not taught out.

It was interest that the author said it was ok to standardize but to standardize to soon because you may be locked into a grossly ineffiecient way of doing something.

The Design of Everyday things Chapter 6

I really like the idea of handmade things or maybe it’s just the concept behind man made things and the fact that the skills for making these objects are passed down through generations. By doing this the problems are tweaked as the objects are reproduced over and over again which helps work out the bugs and ultimately makes a better product. Why can't we do this with everything?

Good design takes time and everything must be considered.

I thought it was interesting that some of the first type writers were in all CAPS

Fun Fact Frank McGurrin invented the whole idea of memorizing key locations and that you can type with all fingers. What was interesting was the fact that his idea was not automatically except as being the best solution. There was a national contest and it was determined through that process that his was the best solution.

Corporate Bureaucrats only means bad design because if you can’t contact or research the users of a product then that only means on thing, it’s probably not going too met there needs. I call it Designing Blind

Chapters 12 & 13

I want to take risks too, but the problem is I don't have the money to make the risks on a concept product, and if I did have the money I may be less willing to make the risk.

We all get these great ideas sometimes but never pursued only finding out a year later someone else has produced the same idea.

Know your surroundings, Know what’s going on, Know your competitor and what they are up to could be any important aspect in developing a product because your competitor could inadvertently or advertently sink your product.

Interesting aspect of the fad effecting peoples buying habits, that’s a whole different aspect to having a good product. That’s dealing with the psychology of the buyer which sometimes can be finicky and illogical.

Southwest sounds like they have a smart plan with its "funny and friendly" motto. Flying is usually not a pleasant experience so Southwest could at least make it tolerable.

I want to work for Hallmark now, but I wonder how a company can get away with no dress code? Is there no professionalism anymore? If I was going to make a business deal with someone I would have more faith in someone that looks or appears to look successful and competent than someone with sandals and a tie-dye shirt.

Problems occur in are lives so often that we ignore them or dismiss them. " There are lots of things we could pay attention to or worry about but most would be false alarms, irrelevant minor events.
Here is what a designer should do

Understand the causes of error and design to minimize those cause
Make it possible to reverse actions-to undo them- or make it harder to do what cannot be reversed
Make it easier to discover the errors that do occur, and make them easier to correct
Change the attitude towards error

-They know that answers don’t lie within. To design a better shopping cart, they sought out grocery stores and shoppers and industry experts. No one on the team thought for a second that a dozen people within IDEO had all the answers.
-We believe that the teams take root when individuals are given the chance of picking what groups they work with and even occasionally what projects they work on.
-Pressure can help you get it out the door
- On a Mission- Dennis Boyles hot group decided it was time to challenge the status quo-what if we all did that?
- Singapore Airlines- IDEO solved or came up with a solution that saved the airline tens of millions of dollars. They did this by figuring out they could decrease the downtime of the aircraft fleet needed while increasing the number of hours of in flight time.

- It was interesting to find out that IDEO did not limit the amount of office supplies, and kept a well stock refrigerator. It was smart of them to make their employees feel like they were part of the company.
-I think it was a good idea to have an award system for the employee's also
-It was also a great idea to give fortune 500 clients a two-day version of IDEO experience. Called IDEO U
