DOET CH7

Seven Princpiles
Use both Knowledge in the world and knowledge in the head
Simplify the structure of tasks
Make things visible: bridge the gulfs of Execution and Evalutation
Get the mappings right
Exploit the power of constraints, both natural and artifical
Design for error
When all else fails, standardize

Designer (Design Model)> System>(System Image)> User(Users Model)

It is interest that when you simplify a task you have to be careful on how you automate, I can be helpful and harmful at the same time if not taught out.

If all else fails standardize

It was interest that the author said it was ok to standardize but to standardize to soon because you may be locked into a grossly ineffiecient way of doing something.

I want the home of the future!

jOKE

You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your right side is a sharp drop off, and on your left side is an elephant traveling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is a galloping kangaroo and your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the kangaroo. What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation?

If you do not know, see answer below...

Get your drunk ass off the merry-go-round!

Art of Innovation

Ch9

Betty Crocker not wanted here. Hilarious I would have never thought someone wouldn’t like old Betty. I guess there are bigger cultural differences between countries than you would think.

Stubbornly Unmetric

I don’t know about this. NASA better get there butt on the ball and switch over to metric if they haven’t already. I mean come on everyone else is doing it.

I remember seeing the paddle like car chargers for GM, and I remember that thinking to my self man that looks safe. I even wondered how it worked.

The creativity checklist is good for brainstorming ideas helps you see the pro and cons of any given situation

Ch 11

The Sand Hill Challenge would be exciting to me especially if that was part of my job, it would be a good way to get the employees to rally together, and create and innovate. While rejuvenating ones interest in the job, buy again working together to research, create, and design

The Art of Innovation CH6

So neat who would have ever guessed that abyss what filmed in a half-finished nuclear power plant. That James Cameron is a pretty smart fellow- knowing and utilizing your resources is a good, trait to have.

The really should make a movie out of Jeff Bezo’s journey to success and how he accomplished the amozon.com success – should be a self help movie “ How to make a multibillion dollar internet company.”

Some of the bravest people in the world are people who build experimental aircrafts- or crazy. My hats off to Chuck Yeager I would have never wanted to be a test subject. I think its interest that some of the first aircraft were model to look like a bullet.

A foot ball that makes me look good- I would by one because I can’t trough a spiral ball.

Sometimes the easiest solutions are the best and only cost a $1.80

Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of re branding just as long as you don’t wait for congress

The Design of Everyday things Chapter 6

I really like the idea of handmade things or maybe it’s just the concept behind man made things and the fact that the skills for making these objects are passed down through generations. By doing this the problems are tweaked as the objects are reproduced over and over again which helps work out the bugs and ultimately makes a better product. Why can't we do this with everything?

Good design takes time and everything must be considered.

I thought it was interesting that some of the first type writers were in all CAPS

Fun Fact Frank McGurrin invented the whole idea of memorizing key locations and that you can type with all fingers. What was interesting was the fact that his idea was not automatically except as being the best solution. There was a national contest and it was determined through that process that his was the best solution.

“ Frank Llyod Wright evidently wasn’t very sympathetic about complaints. When Johson the late pres. of S.C. Johson, Inc. called Wright about his roof leaking on a dinner guest. Frank responded by telling him to move his chair.- Classic example of form over function and Mr. Wright just didn’t want to hear about it. Today’s world doesn’t operate like that; the objects and place we use must be functional and aesthetically pleasing. I have been in “Falling Water” and “Kentuck Knob” and I can say they are beautiful but I would never want to live there.

I think it’s a wonderful idea when you involve the people that are going to use a area and get there take on how its going to be design

Corporate Bureaucrats only means bad design because if you can’t contact or research the users of a product then that only means on thing, it’s probably not going too met there needs. I call it Designing Blind

Designing for everyone it’s a wonderful Utopian idea, but can it be done? Is it to large of a task?

I can’t wait until the day we have automated cars.

When designing using a cultural constrain you would be best to build from it. Only make slight alterations

Chapters 12 & 13

I want to take risks too, but the problem is I don't have the money to make the risks on a concept product, and if I did have the money I may be less willing to make the risk.

We all get these great ideas sometimes but never pursued only finding out a year later someone else has produced the same idea.

Know your surroundings, Know what’s going on, Know your competitor and what they are up to could be any important aspect in developing a product because your competitor could inadvertently or advertently sink your product.

Interesting aspect of the fad effecting peoples buying habits, that’s a whole different aspect to having a good product. That’s dealing with the psychology of the buyer which sometimes can be finicky and illogical.

Southwest sounds like they have a smart plan with its "funny and friendly" motto. Flying is usually not a pleasant experience so Southwest could at least make it tolerable.

Money, Money, Money, 750 million in development and manufacturing cost just to get a close shave. - Thanks Gillette for the Mach3 cause I use it, but it was also do to the fact of there marketing campaign, somehow they sent me on my birthday. How sweet of them to remember me. - God only knows how they knew when my birthday was in the first place.

You go Miss Nesmith - a lesser woman would have given up on the white out solution. I solute you because know I can make as many spelling mistakes as I please, and oh boy do I ever.

Thank god for open source I use it all the time, and don't know what I would do without it because I'm not a programmer, I’m a designer.

Know I can use this as an excuse "That's OK. Einstein got lousy grades in math and physics."

I think Igloo should market to the Morgantown party crowd. Showing of its new spacious room for a six pack

I want to work for Hallmark now, but I wonder how a company can get away with no dress code? Is there no professionalism anymore? If I was going to make a business deal with someone I would have more faith in someone that looks or appears to look successful and competent than someone with sandals and a tie-dye shirt.

I think that the easy deliberator is one of the best products that they have come up with-I’m sure it has saved many lives. Now that’s something to be proud of.

I didn't know that IDEO worked on the batteries for the Palm-very interesting
